This guide is genuinely relevant for clients who have completed a Citizenship-by-Investment or Golden Visa pathway (covered in 7 Continents’ dedicated Citizenship by Investment and Golden Visa guides) and have since naturalised in their new country, and now wish to formally renounce Pakistani citizenship, a process legally distinct from, and typically completed well AFTER, the original immigration pathway itself.
Three points every applicant should understand up front. We disclose them clearly to every client.
This guide is genuinely relevant for clients who have completed a Citizenship-by-Investment or Golden Visa pathway (covered in 7 Continents’ dedicated Phase 6 and Phase 7 guides) and have since naturalised in their new country, and now wish to formally renounce Pakistani citizenship. This is a process legally distinct from, and typically completed well AFTER, the original immigration pathway itself.
The base government fee set by DGIP Islamabad is PKR 500. However, genuine, significant variance exists across individual Pakistani Missions worldwide, who set their own local-currency processing fees. Illustrative examples: EUR 15 per person (Frankfurt), INR 7,600 (New Delhi). Always confirm the current, exact fee directly via YOUR specific local Pakistani Mission, given this varies considerably by location.
You legally cease to be a Pakistani citizen from the DATE OF REGISTRATION of your renunciation by DGIP Islamabad, NOT from the date you submitted your application. This distinction genuinely matters for any time-sensitive planning around your citizenship status.
The declaration is made on Form ‘X’ and submitted to the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP) Islamabad THROUGH your local Pakistan Mission abroad (embassy or consulate), not sent directly to Islamabad. A parallel online application to NADRA for cancellation of your CNIC/NICOP runs alongside it.
Confirm you hold citizenship or valid nationality documentation from another country.
Obtain Form ‘X’ from your local Pakistan Mission abroad (or DGIP directly).
Typed (not handwritten), 3 sets, signed, and notarized as required by your specific mission.
Apply at id.nadra.gov.pk for CNIC/NICOP cancellation and retain the confirmation email and payment proof.
Submit your complete application, generally in person, at the relevant Pakistan Mission; confirm your mission’s current in-person or postal procedure.
DGIP states a complete application typically takes approximately 4 weeks for the renunciation certificate to be delivered.
Status-checking: You may check your application’s status by emailing immigration@dgip.gov.pk. DGIP specifically advises waiting until AFTER 3 MONTHS from submission before making this status inquiry.
Confirm before you begin: This guide reflects current DGIP and MOFA procedures. Always confirm current, exact requirements directly via dgip.gov.pk, mofa.gov.pk and your specific local Pakistani Mission before beginning, given individual mission requirements can vary.
This guide covers 4 core topics: Eligibility & Legal Basis (Form X), The Document Checklist & NADRA Cancellation Process, Fees & Processing Timeline, and Special Circumstances & Children’s Citizenship Provisions.

Common mistakes, practical tips and the key points every applicant should be told clearly.
Assuming the PKR 500 DGIP base fee is the full cost; genuine mission-specific fees can be substantially higher. Submitting a ‘lost report’ in place of an original CNIC/NICOP; this will not be accepted. Not completing the parallel NADRA cancellation application early, delaying the Form X submission which requires its confirmation. Checking application status before the recommended 3-month waiting period.
Confirm your specific mission’s exact current fee and submission procedure before beginning. Complete your NADRA online cancellation application early, given its confirmation is a required Form X supporting document. If renouncing with minor children, note their 21st-birthday-plus-1-year window for any future citizenship-resumption right.
The genuinely significant, honest fee variance between the PKR 500 DGIP base figure and actual mission-specific charges should be communicated clearly to avoid client budgeting confusion. The valuable, protective resumption right for minor children affected by a parent’s renunciation should be explained clearly and proactively to any client with children. The genuine, documented NADRA-record-gap complication should be acknowledged honestly with clients uncertain about their own documentation history, rather than assuming this process is always straightforward.
Age limits and automatic provisions for minor children apply to every renunciation application.
1 year
Age 21
The DGIP base fee is PKR 500, but individual Pakistani Missions abroad charge their own local fee, which can be significantly higher. Always confirm the current fee with your specific mission.
If a male renounces, his minor children residing outside Pakistan also automatically lose citizenship, but may resume it within 1 year of turning 21.
Yes. You must separately apply online via NADRA for CNIC/NICOP cancellation, and this confirmation is a required supporting document for your Form X submission.
